We came here to celebrate my friend’s birthday and the servers were very welcoming and attentive to us. The restaurant had a nice oriental atmosphere with the dim lighting though I found it a tad too dark to my liking. The server was very helpful when we asked for recommendations for cold dish or entree. Even though I didn’t get her name, she had a very delightful smile and provided her honest feedback and recommendations here. We decided to go for prawn wontons in chinkiang vinegar as suggested, also ordered black pepper Wagyu beef, grandfathers fried rice, and spinach and fermented bean curd for sharing. The highlight of the night would be the prawn wontons. Not only they tasted fresh, they were also flavorful with the sauce and very well balanced. Their skin was thin and smooth as well. The fried rice was average in my opinion and it got saltier towards the end, same as the spinach and bean curd. They tasted delicious in the beginning, but the saltiness at the bottom of the bowl/plate was overwhelming. The Wagyu beef was my least favorite. It was overpriced to me and I never quite liked stir fried beef as they were overcooked for me. The pepper flavor of the beef was as overwhelming as its saltiness. Though, I liked the potatoes they put with the beef. They were crispy and flavorful to my liking. We had sticky date pudding and dragon eyes as dessert post meal. I was surprised at the presentation of dragon eyes as they didn’t expect it to be that plain. Overall I enjoyed my dining experience here still as the customer service was good.
WOW!! Every plate was just spectacular! The meat (pork, beef and chicken) was all cooked to perfection, paired with the most flavoursome sauces and seasoning. Must haves are the prawn toast, cold cut chicken starter, char siu pork and black pepper wagyu beef. Serving sizes are very generous too. Vibey ambience and interior, topped with the most friendly and productive service - special shoutout to the lovely Sumin!! Will definitely be back soon!
We stumbled upon Grandfather’s while looking for a new place to have lunch. We were not disappointed. The restaurant is hidden away in the back alley. Very unassuming entrance. Upon entering you are warmly greeted and seated by the staff. The atmosphere is vey intimate and very much like a speak easy with low lighting and comfortable seating. The service is impeccable and very friendly. Luke made sure our glass was never empty. The food is Chinese but very creative and absolutely delicious. What a great find. I would definitely recommend Grandfather’s for an intimate dining experience or a catch up with friends and family.
Grandfather’s in Sydney CBD offers great food and a fun, vibrant atmosphere. The menu leans modern Chinese with standout dishes like the prawn toast and wagyu mains—flavourful and well-executed. Service was excellent—attentive, friendly, and helpful throughout. Drinks were also a highlight, with a great cocktail list. That said, it’s definitely on the expensive side, and the space can get quite loud, especially in the evenings. Still, it’s a solid pick for a special night out or group dinner with a bit of buzz.
Mandatory tipping ruins a perfect experience! Until this restaurant updates this policy, i will not be coming back. Might I suggest the hundreds of small, family owned Asian restaurants in Haymarket, Eastwood, Burwood, and Chatswood. Food was excellent and service was impeccable. Could not find a fault with the restaurant until we paid for the bill. I was informed groups of 5 have a mandatory 10% gratuity. Upon checking the menu and website I did see this was written in small text at the bottom, however it left a very, very poor taste in my mouth. One, a group of 5 was only one table and from previous experiences dining out in Sydney these large party gratuities tend to be for groups of 8 or more. Two, I am unsure if the staff actually receive these gratuities, if the restaurant owners can provide evidence these gratuities go to staff I would be more confortable. Three, and most importantly, this is UNAUSTRALIAN. I would rather pay 10% higher menu item prices. The ACCC website has rules and guidelines against misleading pricing and forced gratuities. As diners, we should call out businesses like this and NOT NORMALISE this behaviour in restaurants. we are in Australia, not America.
